The project was named 'Vessel', in which we were to create some form of 'vessel' out of metal. The vessel was to display at least 3 of the millions of techniques we have learned over the past few weeks. In this case, I chose 'saw peircing'- a tedious method in which one cuts complicated patterns into metal with an incredibly flimsy saw blade that snaps every 5 minutes. I think I went through about 74 blades. I then 'soldered' 12 silver wire posts through drilled holes in the metal. This is a frustrating task. It is also next to impossible, and the topic of many of my fellow students' 'facebook rants'. Finally, I used a technique called 'riveting' to attatch 12 pearls to the piece.
The piece is inspired by nature. The patterns are taken from the unpredictable shapes 'veins' make on leaves, and the carefully crafted yet also unpredictable pattern of a spiders web. The piece is made out of copper, which I chose for its autumn colouring.
